Desert Hills Lutheran Church is fortunate to have a staff of skilled and caring individuals who assist the congregation and handle the day-to-day operations. In addition, DHLC is led by our Congregational Council, which consists of nine members elected by the congregation. Each council member serves a three-year term, and terms are arranged so that the terms of one-third of the members expire annually.

Joe Mazur

Facilities & Kitchen Manager

Meet Joe Mazur, our Facilities and Kitchen Manager, who started his career at Desert Hills Lutheran Church on December 11, 2017. Joe maintains the structure of the beautiful DHLC building and keeps it organized for the many groups involved within the church. He supervisors the amazing custodial staff, coordinating and scheduling their time and activities. He even gets to cook and work with outstanding kitchen volunteers that help make and prepare the meals for all the different events. Joe often shares that cooking for members and guests brings him great joy. Joe is a self-taught cook with a back-up plan of ordering pizza while learning new recipes. He likes the challenge of cooking dishes from around the world. Since coming to DHLC, he has tried to focus more on Scandinavian and German dishes.

Before joining the DHLC family, Joe flipped multiple homes that had been neglected with most of his knowledge coming from the restoration of a six-unit brick and limestone 1918 home on the north shore of Chicago. “Understanding how things used to be done helps you decide if the new ways are better or not.” The 1918 building was built by master craftsmen, “a level of expertise I admire”.

Joe has been married to his best friend, Tom, for 25 years. Their current rescue Bichon is named Tucker. Tucker has a friendly disposition and is always very happy to greet all visitors.

We are all so lucky to have Joe as part of our DHLC family.
