Notes:

When will Jesus return? There has always been a lot of speculation and discussion about the return of Jesus. Predictions of the date of Jesus’ arrival have dotted human history the past 2,000 years. One of the key ingredients of the return of Jesus or the end of time is the outpouring of God’s wrath. Even Hollywood uses this concept when it shows the end of the world. Yet, as we begin our Advent journey together, we start with both the acknowledgment that none of us, including Jesus, know the time or date of Jesus’ return, and that when it does happen, it is not to reveal God’s wrath but to reveal God’s kingdom and authority. The word apocalypse or revelations in English means: it is the unveiling of something; the revealing of something. What’s more, it is the revelation of something good: the full in-breaking of God’s kingdom when Christ, the King of Kings returns. The Apocalypse is not something to fear, but to anticipate, to await. So as people of faith in the promise of God’s Kingdom coming, we wait, not knowing when, but knowing it is coming. So, what do we do while we wait? We do the work of the kingdom. We live each day under the promise of Jesus’ return, as in the days of Noah; and we structure our lives in such a way that we might get glimpses of the kingdom. In a season where each day gets a little bit shorter and darkness seems to be edging all the closer, we know the light has come and the darkness cannot overcome it. So, we wait, with hope and confidence.

When you think about the end-times, does it bring to you a sense of fear or anticipation?
