Notes:

We begin our study on the meals of Jesus. We often think of the question “Who is my neighbor?” as the fundamental question of the New Testament, but equally as important is the question “Who should I eat with?” Eating with someone was a big deal in Jesus’ day and is still important in many cultures. To eat with someone is to recognize them as equals and someone you want to be associated with. In 1979, when Israel and Egypt signed a peace treaty, it was celebrated with a meal, which represented their mutual support for one another and their country. Much of the Jewish law enacted pertained to the dining practices of the people. People were considered unclean because they did not wash their hands properly before a meal. A Jewish person would be hesitant to eat with a gentile because they wouldn't know if the food was prepared properly. In this weekends text, Jesus does not answer, who should I eat with? Instead, he makes the question irrelevant. The meal Jesus invites us to is a meal where all are welcomed; a meal where the lion lays down with the lamb.
