Meals as a Sign "Of Promise"- Sat, July 30, 2022

At the end of Luke (Chapter 24) Jesus uses two different meal opportunities to reveal the value of creation and the promise of God for the restoration of the world. In both the encounter of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus and breakfast on the beach, the meal was a central aspect of the encounter. Jesus breaking bread and eating fish signified the value of the created world. Even though Jesus was resurrected with a glorified body, he still interacted with creation and even ate. These interactions reveal the fulfillment of God’s promise in Revelations 19 that there will be a new heaven and a new earth. It also reveals that the original proclamation of God that creation was very good in Genesis still holds true in the world that is yet to come. The world will not be destroyed but transformed. We all live in the in-between time’ in between the reality of good Friday with its brokenness and pain, and the new reality of God’s kingdom, which is coming but not yet here. In the ending of Luke Jesus gives us both the opportunity to express our pain and disappointment in the reality of life today but also leaves us with the assurance of God’s promise that the transformation of life has begun.
