What to do when new adventures fail? Go back to what you did before. In today’s gospel John 21:1-19, the disciples, despite their encounter with the risen Jesus, still seem confused by what to do. There had been only two resurrection appearances and the promised Holy Spirit was not yet evident. The disciples are at a lost of what to do; what next step should they take. So instead of moving forward; they step back, back to their old lives. They go fishing. Despite fishing all night, they caught nothing. Their old life, their old familiar patterns no longer worked in this new reality of the risen Christ. At this moment Jesus appears to them, inviting them into a new pattern of life. This pattern that will call them to feed and tender the sheep as they wait for God’s revelation to be revealed anew.

Dig Deeper:

What familiar patterns might you need to let go of in order to feed and tend the sheep God might be calling into your care?
