Sermon Thoughts:

This weekend’s text is John 17:20-26 which is part of what is often described as the Highly Priestly Prayer. In this text, Jesus prays for the disciples and for us. Today we get to overhear Jesus’ heart for us and the world as Jesus lifts us up in prayer. He prays that the disciples may endure the challenges that come their way. He prays that they may discover strength in their unity. He prays that they will be drawn together as one as Jesus and the heavenly Father are one. And then he prays not only for them, but for all who will believe in Jesus because of their witness. Jesus is pouring out his heart in this prayer. And that is what prayer really is, pouring out one’s heart. All that is in your heart, fears, worries, anger, and praise; all of it in prayer to God. Have you ever had someone pray over you? When they pour out their heart for you. It can be a powerful experience.

Dig deeper:

I invite you to pray for someone – preferably in their presence and out loud and pour out your heart for them to God. Pray for what you hope God is able to do in their lives and reveal to them your heart for them.
