Notes:

This weekend’s gospel lesson John 13:31-35 comes during Jesus’ last supper with his disciples. Earlier in John 13, Jesus has washed all the disciple’s feet, even Judas who will betray him, Peter who will deny him and the others who will not even be able to stay awake to pray with him in the garden. In Jesus’ deepest time of need all his disciples failed him, yet he continued to perform acts of love for them. Their actions or lack thereof did not deter Jesus’ acts of love. He then proclaims to them a new commandment: Love one another as I have loved you. We love others from the place of being loved ourselves by God. Often, we are so focused on loving others that we forget how much God loves us. Jesus showed his disciples his love for them before he invited them to love others.

Digger deeper:

Write a list of places or activities where you encounter God’s love for you. For example, the sound of the ocean roar, watching hummingbirds, the beauty of the sunrise, etc.
