Notes:

Counting the cost of following Jesus. While Jesus proclaims to us that all who are weary and carry a heavy burden should come to Him because his burden is light; he also proclaims to us “Take Up Your Cross and Follow Me.” Jesus called followers or disciples and not fans, worshipers or even admirers. An admirer or fan appreciates and values a certain characteristic or skill of another. I admire their courage during the storm or I am a fan of their singing. Admirers and fans focus their attention on the individual’s abilities or attributes and not on the entirety of the person.

What, then, is the difference between an admirer and a follower? A follower is or strives to be what they admire. An admirer, however, keeps themselves personally detached. They fail to see that what is admired involves a claim upon them, and thus they fail to be or strive to be what they admire.

The admirer never makes any true sacrifices. They always play it safe. They leave nothing behind and are not willing to reconstruct their lives to be like the one they admire. While the follower leaves behind everything to become what they admire, they understand that to become someone new they must be willing to sacrifice all that gets in the way of this transformation.
