Notes:

What is the meaning of Jesus’ ascension into heaven? Has he had enough of us and this broken world that he leaves so he can return to heaven’s peace and wholeness? In Matthew 17:17, we hear these words, “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you?” Is Jesus giving up on us and the world when he leaves? Earlier, Jesus promised the Holy Spirit; the one that God promised. God has not given up on the world. In fact, God is entering the world in a new and personal way. The Holy Spirit will be given to each believer that they might know and trust God’s love and presence in their lives. Instead of grieving Jesus’s return to heaven, the disciples rejoice. For now, God is with them, and they have been called to witness to God’s presence and power in the world.
