Preacher: Pastor Mike Sager

Series: Conversations with Jesus

Category: Worship Services

Notes:

This weekend’s text contrasts with last weekend's story of Nicodemus. Nicodemus is identified by name, is a faithful Jew, a male, a Pharisee, an authority in the law, and came at night. While the Samaritan woman is unnamed, a Samaritan, a woman, has no authority, and came at noon - the brightest time of day. The writer of the Gospel of John likes to make this comparison of light and darkness to reveal the truth about Jesus. Both Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman have a conversation with Jesus. Nicodemus leaves with more questions than answers, while the woman is convinced that Jesus is the savior of the world to whom she invites others to come and see for themselves. The woman leaves behind her water jars, full of the water she came for, and goes to tell others of what has happened to her. She experienced the living water that Jesus offered her, for faith is like a spring of living water. On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” (John 7:37-38 NIV)
