Galatians 3:1-14

In this section of Galatians, Paul addresses the real concern of his letter. Is faith enough? Paul passes over the covenant of God made to Moses – the covenant based upon the law – and instead, focuses on the covenant made to Abraham. The promise of descendants, land, and to be blessed so as to be a blessing to all nations. Paul reminds the Galatians that this promise to Abraham came as a gift from God. Abraham accepted this and acted accordingly… his righteousness came to him because he trusted and lived upon this promise and gift. God’s promise and gift came first, and then came Abraham’s faith. Paul sees that the gift of the law, which was given to be a guide on how to live this new life in God, became to Israel not a blessing, but a roadblock to God’s blessings flowing out into the world. This law became a way to curse the world and not bless the world. Paul claims that in response to this roadblock, Jesus took on the curse of the cross so that through him God’s blessings could once again flow into the world. When we rely on the works of our flesh (what we do for God), we once again become a roadblock to God’s grace and become a curse and not a blessing.

Dig Deeper:

What roadblocks are there in the way of God’s blessings reaching the world today? How can the fact of the cross and the gift of the spirit be applied to them?
