Text: Luke 2:15-20

The turn of the calendar often brings with it a time of reflection on the previous year and wonder about the year yet to unfold. As we celebrate this New Year’s weekend, we read in Luke 2:15-20, about the shepherds who upon hearing the announcement of the angels, left their sheep and headed into Bethlehem to see the baby in a manger. In this scene, we have three movements that might help us in the year to come. The Shepherds came with expectations. What expectations do you have for your life this coming year? What does God have in store for your life? The shepherds expected to see what the angels had announced; a baby in bands of cloth laying in a manger - a child born for them - for you. Once they saw for themselves this wonderful event, they were filled with wonder and joy with all that they had seen and heard. While their lives might have looked unchanged to everyone else, living in the wilderness and the smell of sheep in their clothes and hair, their hearts and minds were filled with joy. So much joy that they began to proclaim to others what they heard and saw. These men who were more comfortable being around sheep than other people, became the first witnesses to God’s entry into the human story. God’s entry into their story. How can these three movements of expectation, joy, and sharing help shape the life of Desert Hills and your own life this new year?

Dig Deeper:

How might the expectation that God is always with you and loves you fill you with such joy that you would want to share this joy with others?
