Acts 9:1-19a

This weekend we celebrate Reformation. Often when we think of Reformation, we think of an event in history. The age of reason was born out of this protest of the status quo of the church and their corruption of the faith. Because of this focus on the past, it is easy to believe that Reformation is about a past event and has nothing to say to us today. But that is far from the truth. The need to be always reforming, always moving forward, is just as important today because we are not there yet. We have not yet fully experienced the kingdom of God. We must not settle for where we are, believing the best has already passed. Like Saul, we are called to rethink what it means to follow God. The scales falling from Saul’s eyes indicated a new perspective that previously had not been available. The realization that we are not there yet does not minimize where we have been nor devalue what we have learned or done. Instead, it calls us to keep our heads up and our eyes looking forward as we trust God’s reforming Spirit working in us to see anew what we could not see before.
