Notes:

This weekend's gospel comes from a section of Luke that is often described as the sermon on the plain, which closely parallels the more famous sermon on the mount in Matthew. In this sermon on the plain, Jesus calls his disciples and us to a new way of living. A way that is contrary to the norms of the world and reflects a whole new way of living and relating to others. This sermon raises a lot of questions:

  • Is loving your enemy the same thing as letting them do whatever they want to you?
  • Where is the limit, if there is one, to loving our enemies?

In verses 32-34, the word that Jesus uses that is often translated as either credit or receive is in fact the word grace. So, the actual wording for 32, 33, and 34 is 32 “If you love only the people who love you, why should you (be graced with) a blessing? Even sinners love those who love them! 33 And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you (be graced with) a blessing? Even sinners do that! 34 And if you lend only to those from whom you hope to get it back, why should you (be graced with) a blessing? Even sinners lend to sinners."

  • How does using the word grace, instead of credit or receive, change the way you understand this text?
  • We at Desert Hills celebrate Grace – how does this call of Jesus to extend grace deepen your appreciation of grace?
