Matthew 8:23-27

We find the disciples alone in the boat with Jesus as they cross the lake at night. As they are crossing, a terrifying and threatening storm arises that cause these men of the sea to become convinced that they are about to die. They cry out to Jesus, who happens to be asleep at the back of the boat, “Don’t you care that we are about to die?” Jesus rebukes the wind and the waves and then turns his attention to the disciples as he says to them, “What little faith you have.” I have found myself in such situations where I cry out to God, “Don’t you care? Don’t you understand what I am going through? Are you asleep?” I think we have all experienced times, especially in storms, when we question or doubt God’s care for us. This gospel has the same message for us as for the disciples in the boat. Even when the storms of life engulf us and our lives seem threatened and all seems lost, Jesus, the Risen One, is always in the boat with us. Christ’s words, “Peace! Be still!” still promise to carry us safely through the night.

Dig Deeper

Reflect on the storms of your life. During those experiences did you ever feel as if Jesus (God) seemed uninterested, uncaring, or even asleep? If so, was your faith weakened or strengthened by having this experience?
