Notes:

Who does Paul think he is? This is the question being raised by outsiders in the town of Galatia. These outsiders are accusing Paul of not sharing the whole gospel because Paul is not concerned that gentiles are becoming Christians without becoming Jewish first, including the requirement of circumcision. For these outsiders, the gospel and work of Jesus can only be received by those who continue to follow the tradition and practices of Judaism. Paul responds with the proclamation that his message is the whole gospel which he received directly from Jesus Christ, and, thus, is not based upon human desires nor to win favor among others. For Paul, the true and only gospel is one that focuses on what Jesus Christ did for us on the cross, and to add any human effort to the work of Christ is to deny the saving work of the cross. In Galatians, Paul is imagining a new community of God, where there is no longer any division among people neither Jew nor Gentile, but all are united in one community of God.

Dig Deeper:

I invite you to read through the book of Galatians. Notice what is at stake according to Paul, if we turn our attention away from the cross, or allow for the divisions of the world to separate us from each other in the kingdom of God.
