Notes:

Today’s gospel begins with two disciples walking to Emmaus, overcome with sadness, loss, and disappointment. They had hoped Jesus, who was crucified, would be the one to redeem Israel. To a world lost in darkness, Christ offers himself as a guide. The road is an important image in the Gospel of Luke. It is on the road where many of Jesus’ stories and ministry take place. While the image of road is important, another even more important image is used in this story, the table or meal. The disciples still don’t know who Jesus is, but they invite him to stay with them for dinner. It is at the dinner table that the disciples discover who Jesus is in the breaking of bread and sharing of a meal. Psalm 23 reminds us that God has spread a table before us with an abundance of food and wine. Jesus transforms the table from a place of exclusion to a place where all might be fed.
