Notes:

In this weekend’s parable, Jesus is responding to those who feel that they have “missed the boat” in their relationship with God, believing they are too old to join the church and receive God’s grace. The parable tells of a common practice during Jesus’ time. Workers would go to a place in the market and hope that someone would come and hire them for the day. Good landowners would first pick those people who were strong, healthy, and able to do the task at hand to work their fields. Think of picking teams when you were growing up. It started with those that could play and ended up with that last kid who everyone knew was going to be a “pity pick”. This would have been the same idea as the parable states. As the day wore on, those who were not as “strong” would remain, and if finally chosen, would not expect a full day’s wage. So, imagine their joy when an owner finally chose them late in the day and gave them a full wage.

We have all heard about “deathbed confessions”. This person never believed or fully accepted God their whole life and then in the end accepted God into their life. Is there a loser here? Yes, this person missed out on living their life with a grace-filled God. We know God as gracious, who are we to begrudge someone else that promise, especially when it does not diminish our relationship with God in any way.

Dig deeper:

Imagine a time when you were glad that God was gracious to you.
