Notes:

If you have read C.S. Lewis’ Narnia series, you would be aware that God is portrayed as Aslan, a lion. In the first book of the Chronicles of Narnia, when confronted by the idea of Aslan, the lion, who is a picture of God, Lucy asks, "Is he safe?"

"Safe?" said Mr. Beaver. "Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you."

Mr. Tumnus also says, "He's wild, you know. Not a tame lion."

In the book of Numbers, we discover a God who is not safe but is just and kind. The people have grumbled against Moses and God as they have wandered in the wilderness. Within their grumbling, God sends snakes among the people causing many to die. The people, believing that their grumbling has caused God to send the snakes, ask Moses to intercede on their behalf, hoping the snakes will be taken away. But instead of taking the snakes away, God provides a way for them to be healed as they continue to be bitten by the snakes. In our baptism, our brokenness is not taken away. We still experience the pain of the snakes that bite us, but like the Israelites who can look upon the bronze snake to be healed, we can trust Jesus being lifted up on the cross for us and turn to him to be healed.
