In both the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, Jesus’ disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. Why was this so important to the disciples that they wanted Jesus to teach them? What is the purpose of prayer? Can you pray wrong? For the next four weeks, we will be exploring the value and purpose of prayer. The focus this week is how prayer reveals to us the heart of God. In John 17, Jesus is praying for the disciples as he is preparing them for his ascension back to the Father. In this prayer, Jesus reveals to the disciples and us what is the deep desire or the heart of God. God wants us to be one with the Father as Jesus is one with the Father so that they will know that God loves them and the world. The main theme of the Gospel of John is the famous passage John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Prayer draws us into the very heart of God, where God’s love for us and the world is disclosed.
