Series: The Cost of Following Jesus

Category: Worship Services

Notes:

Last week we heard about the choice that we have daily between either to follow Jesus’ way of life or the way of the world. This week we begin to see what that way of life might look like. Heal the sick, feed the hungry, and bring good news to those in need. Jesus tells the 70 disciples who he sends out and us that the workers are few, but the harvest is plentiful. Does the harvest seem plentiful? We hear the news and research that reveals that more and more individuals are moving away from the faith. Churches continue to close and have fewer in worship each week. It would seem as if the harvest is over. It probably seems the same way with the early Christians. The growth of the church was slow. Most of the time they faced rejection and persecution. The workers might be few, but so was the harvest. According to this text, who were we supposed to harvest? The poor, the ones in need of healing, the broken. Are there still ones who need healing, hope, love, and food among us today? Is the need any less than in Jesus’ day or ever in the history of the world. Are we any less in need of hope and healing today? So, though it may appear on the surface that the harvest is limited, the reality is that the harvest is just as great if not greater than in the past. The world continues to be a place that experiences great brokenness and needs healing and love.
