Notes:

“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.” In fourteen verses, the Gospel of Matthew shows how broad the love and compassion of Jesus really is. Jesus sees something in Matthew, a tax collector. He calls Matthew to leave his profession and follow him. Jesus is then accused of eating with tax collectors and sinners. Who else could Matthew invite to dinner but those who were like him? How surprised would these same people be when they found out this tax collector was going to be one of the chosen disciples. Jesus goes from questions about dinner companions to an important leader of the synagogue who could care less that he was eating with the “wrong” people, because his daughter desperately needed help. Jesus follows him. On the way, an unclean woman does not even speak to Jesus but touches his robe, knowing she will be made well. What is sometimes missed is that Jesus, because of his actions, restored the whole person allowing them to participate in the life of the community which labeled them as outcasts. Imagine your joy in knowing that Jesus is with all of us regardless of what we need.
