Notes:

During our Lenten season, we have been focusing on conversations with Jesus mainly found in the Gospel of John. We have heard the conversations between Jesus and the devil, Nicodemus, and the Samaritan woman. This weekend, we hear Jesus’ conversation with the blind man. What is unique about this weekend’s text is that this is the largest section of John where Jesus is nowhere to be found. Jesus heals the blind man, disappears from the story, and returns once the blind man (who is no longer blind) is kicked out of the community and is wondering what is next for him. Much of the conversations recorded are about trying to define someone else. Who is this Jesus? Is this really the blind man? Who sinned? Who can do such things, especially on a Sabbath?

Think about how many conversations we have with others, trying to define others by what we think we know about them. Often the labels we are given, both positive and negative, can hold us captive from moving forward. Jesus proclaims to the once blind man, and to us, that we are more than the labels placed on us. You are more than the cancer you are struggling with, more than a success or failure in your past, more than the struggles you face. You are the one who has seen the Light of the World, the light that no darkness can overcome. Sisters and brothers in Christ, live in the light of Christ.

Dig Deeper:

Think about what labels have been placed on you and how those labels can become a hinderance to you moving forward.
