Series: Conversations with Jesus

Notes:

Jesus’ last words to those gathered at Lazarus’ tomb were “Unbind him and let him go!” It is the climax of the event… a man who had been dead four days walks out with renewed life. This is the happily ever after, but the rest of the story is one filled with emotions. The emotions that surround family, friends, and community when someone dies is always a rollercoaster ride. One moment you are okay; the next moment the tears never seem to stop. Just when you think your life is starting to make sense again, something triggers you and you are right back to that sense of loss. Perhaps that is what makes the raising of Lazarus so difficult to read and understand. We find ourselves in each one of the roles, because we have been there. A spouse who asks, “Why?” A brother or sister that is crying out to Jesus, “Where were you?” We have been a friend that attends the funeral or cemetery to share in the grief. Today, we even hear that “Jesus wept.” It is intentional that the church uses Lazarus’ rising from the dead during Lent. It shows that even during our grief, we have the faith in the one that has broken the chains of death and gives the hope of an eternal life with our Lord.

Think of a time in the midst of your chaotic emotions when you felt “… the peace of God, which transcends all understanding…” (Philippians 4:7)
