Genesis 9:8-17; 1 Peter 3:18-22

In today’s scripture readings, the writers are comparing the tragic events of life with the deep and abiding promises of God. We begin with the flood story as found in Genesis, where God decides to wipe clean creation because of all the sin and brokenness in the world. Yet, God saves Noah and his family and places in the sky a rainbow to remind himself that God will never again deal with the brokenness of the world through the destruction of a flood. This image of the flood waters is reflected in 1 Peter when these same waters are used to describe how God washes away our brokenness through the waters of baptism. The Gospel of Mark begins Jesus’ ministry with the proclamation of Jesus’ identity in his baptism while at the same time recording the death of John the Baptist and the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness. The Christian walk is not one without storms or struggles but a life grounded in the reality of God’s love and the confidence that God will still be there after the rain with a reminder of God’s love.

Dig Deeper:

How has God’s promises helped you to cope with the storms and struggles of your life?
