Notes:

On the third Sunday of Advent, we focus our attention on love. In Paul’s letters to the Corinthians, Paul reminds us that though faith and hope are important, the greatest of these gifts is love. When faith and hope are known because we are in God’s kingdom, the gift of love is fully realized. Love never fails nor ends. The birth of Jesus as a baby, as one of us, begins to reveal the great mystery of God. What God’s law nor the proclamations of the prophets could not adequately describe is made known to us in the giving of the Son – Jesus. Jesus combines two great commands of God into one overarching command: to love God and to love one’s neighbor as oneself. Love is not limited to our love of God but also must be lived out as we love one another. To love God means one must choose to love the other. As we prepare ourselves to receive this gift of love in the baby Jesus, let us also prepare ourselves to love one another, for the greatest gift God has given us is to love and to be loved.
