"The Problem with a Gatekeeper" April 30, 2023

When you think of being a gatekeeper, or experience a gatekeeper, what are your first reactions? For most of us, when we think of being a gatekeeper, our thoughts turn to keeping someone in or something out. Many of us have experienced someone being a gatekeeper to a new idea or group. This designated person, whether by the group or self-appointed, sees their role as making sure new ideas or people fit the group. Sometimes, we are forced to act as a gatekeeper which can be an awkward position. When Jesus describes himself as a gate and a gatekeeper, how does he understand this role? Is it the one who keeps people out? Or is there another way to look at what it means to be a gatekeeper? Perhaps, one where the role is not to keep others out but to allow them to come and go so they can experience life.
